“It was kinda like jumping off a cliff and seeing if I had a parachute in my back pocket” pop folkie Jason Reeves says of covering hip-hop queen Nicki Minaj’s “Moment 4 Life” for this week’s Mashup Monday.
But rather than plummeting like a stone and crashing, the midwestern singer/songwriter floats gracefully to earth with his acoustic cover of Minaj’s hit 2011 ballad/rap, while still managing to retain its hip-hop flavor by transmuting her flow into a spoken word vibe.

“I did start out making hip-hop music in Iowa when I was in high school,” avowed Minaj fan Reeves reveals. “Way before I ever learned how to play guitar [or] started writing songs, I was actually recording raps.”

With 2011 half-over, Adele‘s 21 and Katy Perry‘s “E.T.” (featuring Kanye West), reign as the year’s biggest selling album and digital song in the U.S., respectively — shifting 2,517,000 and 4,120,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Nicki Minaj‘s Pink Friday is the ninth biggest seller so far in ’11 — the first time a female hip-hop set has been this high since Lauryn Hill‘s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was No. 6 halfway through 1999.

Well, school’s out and summer is officially here, which means it’s time to handicap the race for Summer Jam 2011. Nicki Minaj is an early contendor with “Super Bass”.

4. Nicki Minaj, “Super Bass”: Ms. Minaj’s ode to the guys with the booming systems (and she’s not necessarily talking about the ones in their cars), it’s breezy, sexy and unspeakably catchy — which means it’s a mortal lock to be the soundtrack to a million wet T-shirt contests, only, you know, the ones featuring dudes.
